Hi! God, sorry, I’m completely unused to getting tumblr questions - I hope you haven’t been waiting too long for this answer…
Basically, I had a bunch of names I tried out for him, but there just wasn’t one which wasn’t an anti-climax. He’s who he is, and trying to encapsulate that makes him smaller.
When I wrote the book, I thought Mathew McConaughey would make an amazing Gonzo - I’d been watching Reign of Fire. I wanted Johnny Depp for Ike, too, and Oliver Platt for Humbert. I didn’t know who would play the narrator… hardest bit of casting ever. Now I think maybe Jeffrey Donovan would be good, but it could be so many people… Jude Law, even, because I’ve really been enjoying him in the new Sherlock Holmes movies… but casting is magic, and good casting directors do things you would never imagine and make insanely cool stuff happen…
